I created a photobook under the theme of “an escapism to tranquility” during the first half of the 2022/23 school year for my studio art course. I was trying to seek tranquility while feeling overwhelmed and disoriented. The concept is inspired by English rock band Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018) album.

 

Having just returned to Hong Kong after an exchange semester in Estonia at the beginning of 2022, the biggest difference I realized is how peace and tranquility are absent here. Places are packed with people, people are exhausted by the internet and social media. We don’t have the space to respite; even when we have it, we are too busy diving into our phones. I was feeling particularly lost and none of these helped. Then I realized the importance of having the desire to escape into tranquility. The photobook includes my photography works that revoke tranquility complemented by screenshots, notes, and messages that encouraged me during a low time of my life.
